A Playground Forgotten
Nestled in Waikōloa Village, Puʻu Nui Park has long been a gathering place for Ohana, Keiki, and neighbors. But over time, the playground fell into disrepair. Wooden structures splintered, swings disappeared, and rusted metal pieces made it unsafe for play. For many residents like myself, the park stopped feeling like a welcoming place. Some even described it as looking abandoned. What was once the heart of the neighborhood had grown quiet.
Friends of Puʻu Nui: Grassroots in Action
“Pu’u Nui Park was originally built in the early 90’s.”
That silence didn’t sit well with the community. Out of concern and love for their keiki, a group of local residents formed the Friends of Puʻu Nui Park. This volunteer-driven team dreamed of more than just fixing broken equipment, they envisioned a vibrant, inclusive space for children and families of all ages and abilities.
The Friends began fundraising, organizing community events, and securing donations. Through their efforts, they raised the money needed for new playground equipment and educational play features. Their dedication became the spark that set the park’s transformation into motion.
Putting the Pieces Together
With funds in place, the Friends worked closely with the Waikōloa Community Development Corporation to manage donations and coordinate logistics. The equipment, valued at more than $100,000 arrived in 2023, but progress stalled due to county staffing shortages and ADA compliance requirements.
Still, the Friends of Puʻu Nui Park remained patient and persistent. They rallied volunteers, spread awareness, and kept the vision alive. Finally, in early 2025, construction began. Workers installed new climbing structures, slides, and spinners, along with fresh walkways, retaining walls, and safety surfacing made of turf and rubber mulch.
County-Community Synergy
Puʻu Nui Park’s renewal is a shining example of what’s possible when neighbors and the government come together. Hawaiʻi County Parks & Recreation manages more than 300 facilities island-wide with a limited budget, and projects like this require community partnership.
The Friends provided the vision, funding, and volunteer power, while the county handled the groundwork, construction oversight, and ADA compliance. Together, they turned an aging, unsafe space into a modern, safe, and fun park designed for all.
SEPTEMBER’S CELEBRATION DAY
After years of dreaming, planning, and teamwork, the moment has finally arrived. The Puʻu Nui Park re-grand opening is set for Thursday, September 6, 2025, at 4 p.m.
The event will include a blessing ceremony, community gathering, and a first look at the brand-new playground. Families can expect plenty of smiles, laughter, and celebration as keiki climb, swing, and play in their revitalized park for the very first time.

More Than Just Swings and Slides
Puʻu Nui Park is more than a playground. It’s a symbol of resilience, grassroots effort, and aloha spirit. The upgrades also ensure accessibility, so children of all abilities can enjoy the space together. Future phases may include features like a kid-sized roadway for scooters and bikes, nature play areas, and more community-driven enhancements.
Seeing the Future of Puʻu Nui Park
The journey of Puʻu Nui Park reminds us that lasting change comes when people care enough to take action. Thanks to the Friends of Puʻu Nui Park, the County of Hawaiʻi, and countless volunteers, Waikōloa Village now has a safe, vibrant gathering place once again.
On September 6, the community won’t just celebrate a park, it will celebrate the power of people coming together to create something beautiful for generations to enjoy.
