5 Way to Show Your Appreciation to Our Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day

BY KAPINA LANSDALE

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Do you have your big BBQ planned? Great! Now that you have that part covered what’s your plans to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country?

Though many of us celebrate the day with social events like cookouts, BBQ and backyard get-together, the true meaning of Memorial Day is much deeper than that. To help you mark the occasion with the respect it deserves, here are 5 ways to experience Memorial Day this year and every other year to follow.

HOW TO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION ON MEMORIAL DAY

 Thank a Vet

Memorial Day is about honoring fallen service members, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t use this holiday to show our veterans and enlisted men + women how much they mean to us.

If you have an active or retired member of the military in your life, there’s no better time to pick up the phone or hop on a virtual call and thank your honored veteran for their service.

Pay Your Respects

Some graves are well-maintained by family members, but when there are no living relatives, that chore falls on the shoulders of local veterans groups. Lend a hand by bringing some flowers and helping to beautify a few of the less cared for graves.

Raise you Flag

Sometimes showing your thanks can be as simple as flying Old Glory at your house. She should remain at half mast until noon, as per the tradition.

Honor the National Moment of Remembrance

In 2000, Congress created the National Moment to make sure our troops are honored. At 3 pm local time on Memorial Day, every American is asked to pause for just one minute to honor the fallen. So take a pause from your activities for a moment of silence.
